(Lille 1671–1747 Saint-Germain-en-Laye)
A floral still life with fruit, a parrot and a squirrel, signed lower left: Baptiste,
oil on canvas, 76.7 x 115.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Claudia Salvi, who wrote a comprehensive certificate, for confirming the authenticity of the present painting.
Antoine Monnoyer travelled to England several times in the company of his father, where he became one of the most successful still life painters of his time. Documents prove journeys undertaken to Italy and Sweden (for the decoration of the Royal Palace in Stockholm). Monnoyer further developed the type of sumptuous still life that his father first established in Versailles. He was influenced by artists such as Simon Hardimé. The signature “Baptiste” appears in many works by the artist and is probably to be interpreted as the son’s attempt to boost sales by referring to his father’s fame.
