Belvedere was one of the most outstanding exponents of Neapolitan still life painting. He was inspired by Paolo Porpora and Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo. Typical of his early works are the reduced format and dark background, as well as the terracotta vase that is visible in many of his paintings. Between 1694–1700 Belvedere lived in Madrid as court painter to Charles II of Spain before returning to Naples and devoting himself to theatre.
