(Antwerp 1581–1642)
Witches’ Sabbath,
oil on panel, 35.6 x 56.9 cm, framed
This painting comes with a certificate by Ursula Härting (2013) (Studio of and with Frans Francken II).
Härting writes: “The painting known to me in the original, a ‘Witches’ Sabbath’, was executed in the Antwerp studio of the small figure painter, Frans Francken II. During the creative process, he himself executed in different levels of the picture magical instruments, Satanic monsters and shadowy beings reminiscent of still lifes, and lastly worked in white-grey highlights. The painting is a repetition of a larger sized, signed painting in his hand, which is dated to 1607 (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv.-no. GG_1070). Both pictures have an underlying composition alluding to the magical stories that were depicted in the 16th century in books such as the “Hexenhammer” [“Witches’ Hammer”] (first published in 1486).
