In 1773, Cornelis van Spaendonck, a Dutch artist, followed his brother Gerard to Paris, where he began his long career as a flower painter. In 1779 he had his first exhibition and in 1789 became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. At this time he also headed the Sèvres porcelain factory. Van Spaendonck’s reputation and wealth did not suffer under the Revolution and its aftermath, and he continued to be one of the most popular flower painters in the years to come. His elegant still lifes were already in high demand during his lifetime.
