Jan Brueghel II.

Jan Brueghel II. - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1601–1678)
The Rest on the Flight into Egypt,
oil on panel, 45.1 x 38.8 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examining it in the original. He dates it to the 1630s (written communication).

The present painting is the joint product of two artists. The collaboration of several painters was common practice in 17th century Antwerp. While the landscape is by the hand of Brueghel, the figures were painted by a still unidentified painter who seems to have been a follower of Hendrick van Balen. The present composition is a remarkable example of Jan Brueghel II’s mature manner of painting: it is possible to already recognise the new stylistic elements he adopted in his painting during the 1630s. Jan remained close to his father’s motifs, but renewed the latter’s style, thereby adapting his art to contemporary taste. He replaced Mannerism, which had previously been the dominant style, with a more realistic and straightforward manner of painting.
