Lotto No. 9

Attributed to Paolo Caliari, Paolo Veronese

Attributed to Paolo Caliari, Paolo Veronese - Dipinti antichi

(Verona 1528–1588 Venice)
The Adulteress,
oil on paper, laid down on canvas, 39 x 30 cm, framed

We are grateful to Alessandra Zamperini for suggesting an attribution to Paolo Veronese and Studio for the present painting on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.

The present painting shows part of Veronese’s composition of Christ and the Adulteress, now in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich (Inv. 911) and according to Zamperini the present work can be included in a group of small works made by Veronese together with members of his studio such as the Resurrection of the daughter of Jarius, Louvre, Paris (Inv. 141) or the so-called bozzetto for the Bevilacqua-Lazise altarpiece in the Uffizi, Florence (Inv. 293524). These works are also oil on paper, laid down on canvas. Some scholars consider them to be bozzetti, or studies for the final work; however the may have been produced as ricordi after the compositions and employed by the master of the studio as models for replicas.
