Austrian school, 2nd half 18th century - Di provenienza aristocratica

portrait of Johann Aloys Count Spindler, Freiherr zu Wildenstein (born 1729), oil on canvas, 217 x 125 cm, framed, (GS)

On the back biographical information on the subject (transcribed from the original canvas). The imperial chamberlain Count Spindler was married in 1754 to Maria Josepha Freiin von Rechbach auf Mederndorf who died as early as 1756. He then married in 1758 Maria Theresia Countess of Andlern and Witten. In Upper Austria the Count owned numerous estates, including Weidenholz and Waikhartsberg bei Waizenkirchen. From 1761 he managed the Carinthian properties of the Rechbach family. In addition he served as trustee for the entailed Upper Austrian estates of Peuerbach (for the Counts Batthyany-Strattmann) and Weinberg (for the Counts of Thürheim). These portraits are what remains of a gallery of likenesses of Count Spindler. This family managed, from relatively modest beginnings, to rise high in the hierarchy of status and property. It soon died out however, so that its property was inherited by others.
