so called “Takenplatte”, Rhineland 1st half 17th century, cast iron decorated with coat of arms and inscription, inscription: "LOTHARIVUS DEI GRA ARCHICEPS TREVIRE(H) PRINCEPS ELECTOR" (Lothar by God’s grace, Archbishop of Trier, Elector) dated 1618, 98 x 74 cm (MIN)
Rare chimney plate with the arms of the archbishop and elector of Trier Lothar I. von Metternich (1551-1621), who was known especially for his promotion of art and the sciences. He was the great-great-great-uncle of the famous statesman Count Klemenz Wenzel Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg. Two similar plates with the arms of Lothar I. are known. One, also dated 1618, is in a manor house in Welschbilling-Möhn (Rheinland-Pfalz), and another in Driesch's standard work on oven, chimney and chimney plate (p.153)
