The landscape painter Wilhelm Riedel received his artistic training at the Prague Academy, and with the German landscape and maritime painter Achenbach in Düsseldorf. His study trips took him to Italy several times, although the time he spent in France would have the greatest impact on his artistic oeuvre. His works reflect the influence of French painter Charles-Francois Daubigny, a pioneer of Impressionism. His detail representation of a Paysage intime and his treatment of diffuse light and colour clearly demonstrate his involvement with the en plein air painting of this period.
