The present drawing is presumably a design for a Last Judgement in the Germanischen Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (In. Gm 1589), which was formerly attributed to Christoph Schwarz (1545-1592) and was given to a "Münchner Meister um 1590" recently. As Kurt Löcher in the catalogue raisonné of the museum (Die Gemälde des 16. Jahrhunderts, Nuremberg 1997, S. 462) pointed out, the lower part of the painting may be based on a drawing of a Last Judgement in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, which Konrad Oberhuber identified as a work by Friedrich Sustris (Inv. Nr. Z 1834). This drawing was once attributed to Marten Vos and was presumably a design for a small devotion painting on copper, which may have been executed around 1590. Duke Wilhelm V. from Bavaria may have commissioned the work. Heinrich Geissler also mentioned a drawing in a private collection, which copies the lower half of the Cologne sheet (comp. H. Geissler, Zeichnung in Germany, Deutsche Zeichner 1540-1640, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart 1979/80). It seems very likely that the drawing which was mentioned bei Geissler is the present drawing which was executed in the immediate surrounding of Sustris and can be linked to the Nuremberg oil painting.
