Wouterus Verschuur Sr.

Wouterus Verschuur Sr. - Dipinti a olio e acquarelli del XIX secolo

(Amsterdam 1812-1874 Vorden) Interior with Dogs, View of a Pergola, signed W. Verschuur, oil on panel, 34.2 x 45.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Wouterus Verschuur studied with the landscape and animal painters Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776-1839) and Cornelius Steffelaar (1797-1861), amongst others. His talent was recognized at an early age and he became a member of the Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten and the Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut in Amsterdam in 1833. He lived and worked in Amsterdam as well as The Hague, Brussels and Haarlem. Although primarily based in the Netherlands, he still succeeded in making a name for himself abroad; his paintings were particularly popular with French customers and one of his paintings exhibited at the 1855 World Exhibition in Paris was purchased by Napoleon III. Verschuur specialised in stable interiors and landscapes. Horses, and above all dogs, were his favourite subjects. Verschuur belonged to the last generation of Dutch Romantics who oriented themselves strongly on the works of 17th century artists. In Verschuur’s case, it was the oeuvre of the animal and battle painter Philip Wouwerman which was his greatest influence.
