An early Kpelie mask, Senufo.
Senufo initiation association, called the Poro society, wore these small, finely carved face masks as insignia, the delicate face with geometric projections at the sides. Worn by men, the masks are considered feminine, and honor deceased Senufo elders with their grace and beauty. Around 1900. 31 cm high. Minor breaks.
