Senufo daybed, Ivory Coast. 19th century.
Senufo beds are among the most beautiful and elegant African designs. The elegance of this form enhances the sculptural quality of this functional work of art. This is likely the largest known Senufo day bed. This bed has a mostly flat surface with minimal adornments and a grand sloping headrest. Monumental tapering legs are carved from a single tree trunk. Only a very influential chief could have afforded the transport of such a giant tree. Rich brown/black patina, signs of indigenous repairs. Approx. 275 cm long, 108,5 cm broad, 89 cm high.
