A very important Kikuyu shield 'Ndome', Kenia, - Tribal Art

These shields are passed down from generation to generation. Both sides of these shields are decorated with abstract imagery. The reverse of the shield is always decorated with red, white and black ‘teeth’. The front side of the shield is decorated with distinctive patterns that are changed for each generation of warrior. This individual pattern will be used for the young warrior to decorate his personal war shields. Circa 1900. 64 cm high. Painted wood. Yale University Archives#0123307–01.
