Dutillieu is an art historically interesting court painter to the House of Bourbon. The son of the impoverished Norman aristocrat François Le Pezant du Tillieu, he was instructed in painting by Charles Le Brun. Apprenticed to Cauvin, he was initially trained as a decorative painter. With several still lifes and elaborate carriage ornaments he attracted the attention of the Duchess of Maine, a daughter-in-law of Louis XIV. She entrusted Dutillieu with the decoration of a number of rooms in the palaces of Sceaux and Anet. The artist also completed large scale decorations for the Prince de Condé at the Château de Condé. Towards the end of his career, he painted the monumental ceiling painting The Triumph of Hercules together with François Lemoyne at the Louvre. In 1720 he was admitted to the Academy, where he met Oudry, with whom he collaborated on several projects. Dutillieu’s works reflect the great elegance and courtly refinement typical of French still life painting towards the end of the Grand Siècle.
