Provenance:
with Fritz Rothmann (1893–1983), Berlin, until 1932;
sale, Ruef, Munich, 14 December 2001, lot 454 (as David Teniers II);
Private collection, Bremen, until 2013
In a certificate from 1950, Walther Bernt confirmed the present painting to be an authentic work by David Teniers II. Margret Klinge does not accept this attribution. The RKD, The Hague, however, does accept ‘Attributed to David Teniers II’ for the cataloguing for this painting.
A comparable Portrait of a Man, circa 1650, is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
