Lotto No. 212

Circle of Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse

Circle of Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse - Dipinti antichi

(Maubeuge circa 1478–1532)
The Virgin and Child, said to be Anna van Bergen, Marquise de Veere and her son,
oil on panel, 52.5 x 36.4 cm, unframed

A studio version of the present work was sold at Sotheby’s, London, 26 April 2007, lot 16 (oil on panel, 44 x 32.5 cm.).

Gossaert was born in the Northern French town of Maubeuge in 1478, his nickname deriving from its Dutch name, Mabuse. In 1503 he became a member of the Antwerp painters’ guild and in 1508/9 travelled to Rome in the company of Philip of Burgundy, who had been sent to Pope Julius II as Austrian envoi by Margaret of Austria. Under the impact of the art he had witnessed in Rome, Gossaert became a fervent exponent of depictions of biblical and mythological subjects featuring nude figures. For his northern patrons, Gossaert’s style must have been shockingly new and avant-gardist. He was rightly described as one of the first Renaissance painters of the north.
