Genoese School, 16th Century

Genoese School, 16th Century - Dipinti antichi

Adoration of the Shepherds,
oil on panel, 145 x 154.8 cm, unframed

Provenance:
Private European collection;
where acquired by the present owner

The present painting belongs to the Genoese school of painting from the sixteenth century: a period when various artistic influences from Northern Italy and the Low Countries were assimilated creating eclectic compositional solutions.

The present painting displays the influence of Pier Francesco Sacchi (Pavia 1485–1528 Genoa) and Antonio Semino (Genoa circa 1485 – circa 1555), who was responsible for introducing Renaissance elements into the Genoese artistic tradition. The present Adoration of the Shepherds can also be compared to works by Ottavio Semino (Genoa circa 1527–1607 Milan), and his brother Andrea. A panel by Ottavio Semino representing Saint Augustine dialoguing on the Trinity with the Christ Child is conserved in the church of San Francesco di Paola in Genoa. The artist predominantly devoted himself to fresco painting; he worked between Genoa and Milan, in which city, he spent the latter part of his life in exile.
