Lotto No. 35

Jan Brueghel II

Jan Brueghel II - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1601–1678)
A tazza with flowers and a wreath of flowers,
oil on panel, 36.5 x 52.5 cm, framed

On the reverse the marks of the city of Antwerp and of the panel maker Lambrecht Steens (active between 1608 and 1638).

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the authenticity of the present painting. A certificate is available.

Ertz writes: “The colours typically used by Jan Brueghel the Younger for his blossoms – in both the tazza and the floral wreath – are thickly applied and give a vibrant impression. As was characteristic of the artist’s early period, the manner in which the flowers are painted is still entirely in the tradition of the father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, who had allowed his son to collaborate on some of his flower still lifes before the latter’s journey to Italy. Jan the Younger used his father’s only known tazza as a model for his own flower pieces featuring tazzas, developing from it a completely independent composition.” Ertz dates the present painting into the early 1630s.
