Lotto No. 5

Workshop of the Master of Frankfurt

Workshop of the Master of Frankfurt - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1460–1533?)
Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane,
oil on panel, 76 x 57.2 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection of a Cardinal, Rome, 1631 (according to a lacquer seal with a cardinal’s coat-of-arms reading: COELVM SOCIAVIT 1631, on the reverse)

The town represented in the background of the present painting is Utrecht, with the Cathedral and St. Pieterskerk. Peter van den Brink, whom we thank for his kind assistance, has suggested attributing the present painting to a workshop collaborator of the so-called Master of Frankfurt (Antwerp 1460–1533?).

The depiction of The Agony in the Garden as a night scene, although described as such in the Bible, was not that frequent in the first decades of the Sixteenth Century in Central Europe. In fact, early depictions of this scene by moonlight are rare, a famous contemporary example is Albrecht Altdorfer’s panel for the St. Sebastian altarpiece in the Augustinian cloister of St. Florian in the town of Sankt Florian. Artists must have seen this subject as a challenge by which they could display their painterly abilities.
