Signed works by the Viennese landscape painter Hoetzendorf are rare. After training with Joachim Franz Beich in Munich, Hoetzendorf travelled to Rome, where he spent nearly two years. He received a commission from Monsignor Falconieri for the latter’s villa in Frascati. In 1723 the painter went back to Vienna. During the following years his most important patrons were the abbot and convent of the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig (Lower Austria). Hoetzendorf was already referred to as ‘Celebris Pictor’ in 1723.
