This painting represents the northern section of the Grand Canal with the church of Santa Croce, demolished in the nineteenth century, on the right, and the church of Santa Maria di Nazareth, called ‘degli Scalzi‘ on the left opposite the domed church of San Simeone Piccolo.
Depicted in the foreground is a burchiello, the traditional form of transport that would ferry the Venetian gentility from the city to their mainland villas located along the Brenta river.
This painting relates to a compostion by Giovanni Antonio Canal, Canaletto, engraved by Antonio Visentini as part of his set of Venetian views after Canaletto entitled Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores, published in 1742.
Another version of this composition, by Canaletto‘s nephew, Bernardo Bellotto is in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 2514).
