Austria c. 1760/70

Austria c. 1760/70 - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

The penitent Empress Maria Theresa, watercolour, gouache on vellum, 11 x 8,5 cm, framed, (Hu)

"Maria Theresia weist mit dem zum Betrachter gerichteten A view of die Leiden und den Tod Christi: auf der aufgeschlagenen Seite des Buches sind folgende Worte eingetragen: "Jesus amor meus". (Maria Theresa directing her eyes towards the onlooker is pointing to the suffering and death of Christ: the open page of the book reads the following words "Jesus amor meus"). It is wellknown that Maria Theresa, her husband Franz Stephan and their children were educated in miniature painting. They also created miniatures themselves and painted members of the family in a religious context. Their teacher was presumably the court miniature painter Antonio Bencini, who worked at the Imperial court from the 1740s to the 1780s. “All portraits of the Imperial Family were executed in watercolour on vellum" (Robert Keil, Die Porträtminiaturen des Hauses Habsburg, Vienna 1999, Cat. No 63).
