Jan Lievens, Circle of
(1607-1674)
A study of a hermit, preaching, red chalk on laid paper, 24,6 x 16,2 cm, browned, mounted, framed, (Sch)
The British Museum (Inv. Nr. 1836,0811.347) preserves a comparable drawing with a seated hermit which is a preliminary study for an etching of the same subject by Lievens. (Hollstein 17) The present drawing is comparable with several studies of Lievens around 1631 as for example with the red chalk study „Bust of a Man“ in a private collection (Exh. cat. Amsterdam 1988, p. 36, No 12). Pose and lighting of the studies are comparable and the figure’s model of the present drawing seems to be the same as in the London sheet (Royalton-Kisch 2010, Cat. 3). Even though the present drawing shows some weaknesses in comparison with the studies mentioned above, it can be assigned to the work of Lievens or his circle on the basis of its stylistic and compositional proximity.
