Private collection, Italy.
A comparable head study in red chalk of the same man was sold in an auction at Sotheby's London, 4th Juli 1994 (lot 8). Both studies may relate to the head of God in the center of the ceiling fresco of the Cappella Barbieri (1643-1645) which was the chapel of the artist’s family in the Chiesa del SS. Rosario in Cento (see: Sir Denis Mahon, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri Il Guercino 1591-1666, Exh. Cat. Bologna, 1991, Cat. 98D, Fig. p. 269).
