Lotto No. 18

Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel *

(Wunsiedel 1881-1965 Vienna)
“Obstgarten (Waldwiese)” [The Orchard (Forest Meadow)], c. 1903, stencils and spray paint technique on machine-made paper, signed Jungnickel, sheet-sized image 29.5/30 x 57 cm, Spielvogel-Bodo OG.11, probably slightly trimmed, corner with slight crease, framed, (RAC)

“Sheets worked in this way have a fine-grained, even velvety surface, which can hardly be reproduced. At first glance, they give the impression of colour lithographs. It should also be noted that, by using the same stencil several times, each finished work turned out differently. Furthermore, colour variations were also possible. As a result, each sheet must be regarded as a unique piece. And for this reason the stencil and spray technique rightly belongs to the field of graphic prints. (...) An incomparable masterpiece is the broad-format, serene ‘Waldwiese’ [The forest meadow], also called ‘Obstgarten’ [The Orchard], in which a plethora of wild, sweet-smelling flowers fills the lower half of the image. The field flowers, with their delicate playfulness, create a very charming contrast to the prominent trunks of the old gnarled trees.
(Ilse Spielvogel-Bodo. Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel - Ein Leben für die Kunst. Klagenfurt, Verlag Johannes Heyn 2000, p. 100)
