1966 Porsche 911 deluxe R.S. Coupé

1966 Porsche 911 deluxe R.S. Coupé - Autoveicoli d'epoca

One of only 253 deluxe RS coupés ever built!

In Austria since 1969, owned by the consignor since 1980!

They still exist, the major, unresolved mysteries of this world, even swirling around the most feted of all automobiles, the Porsche 911. One of them goes by the name of 911 deluxe RS Coupé. Only 253 were ever built. The Kardex bears the hand-written inscription “MODEL 1967 911 deluxe R.S. Ex. 13/66” in red lettering. Steve Heinrich’s reportedly saw all 253 Kardex. Why model 1967 if they all bear 1966 chassis numbers? And what does R.S. stand for? What about Ex. 13/66?

What is certain is that these were the last 253 coupés built in the 1966 model year, chassis numbers 304703 to 304955, manufactured between May and June. Like the 1966 models, the cars were equipped with a wooden dashboard, additional headlamps, auxiliary heating and all of the other features of this vintage. But Porsche still calls them 1967 models. Was it perhaps a marketing gag to help sell the last units from the old year’s production? This mystery remains unresolved to this day.

There is no doubt that this specimen is one of these models: chassis 304779, delivered to the Porsche representatives PoAC in Teaneck, New Jersey, on 7 June 1966, accepted there on 31 October 1966. And while the Kardex bears the ominous designation, it is interesting to note that neither the engine nor the gearbox number are stated. So much for matching numbers. The car was painted light ivory (6604 B) and came with an interior in black synthetic leather. The aforementioned Webasto auxiliary heating was also installed, along with a wing mirror on the left-hand side and a Blaupunkt radio with loudspeaker and antenna.

A warranty claim is noted for 24 January 1967. But the 911 doesn’t reappear again until 1969, in Burgenland, Eisenstadt to be precise, where it is inspected on 8 September and receives individual approval on 10 December. The owner registered his Porsche in South Burgenland one day before Christmas. A two-year blocking period indicates that he took the car with him when he moved from the United States. The 911 changed hands once again that the end of this blocking period, and once more in-between, before finally being purchased by the consignor, who was completing national military service at the time, in around 1980. The Porsche had already changed colours back then and was missing its powertrain. In turn, its owner was lacking the finances to have this remedied. Simply being the proud owner of a Porsche was enough for the moment. Indeed, the old boy was not in the greatest of shapes - the car, of course, not the owner. And for the time being, the owner was busy enough with his profession and family, although he did find time to locate a suitable engine and gearbox. Nevertheless, a good 30 years passed until the Porsche was finally restored. But the work was conducted with absolute precision and the outcome is testimony to the meticulous care that was applied! Now the car’s condition matches its history, and both of these factors are equally impressive. As a rare specimen of an insufficiently researched species, this 911 is more than desirable already!

VIN: 304779, mileage: 91,616 km (read), displacement: 1,991 cc/B6, power: 130 hp, colour: light ivory/black (synthetic leather), gearbox: 5-speed, papers: Austrian individual approval
