(Rouen 1791-1824 Paris) A study of a lion, pencil, on paper, laid down on cardboard, 16,2 x 21,2 cm, inscribed "Gérciault=Etudes de lions-2 dessins" in pencil on support by a later hand, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Géricault´s great interest in lions already began early in his career, which is proved by sketch books of his study time which includes copies after lion hunts by Rubens. During his sojourn in London in 1820-21 he made several drawings of wild animals in the zoo with special attention to lions. A facsimile print of this drawing is kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris (Bazin 1997, p. 150, No.2343 B), two copies after the sheet with an attribution to Alexandre Colin from the group of traced copies after Géricault is preserved in the collection of Peter Nathan in Zurich (Bazin 1997, p. 150, No. 2343 C and 2343 D).
