Two drawings with scenes from the life of Saint Benedict after the ceiling frescoes Luca Giordano in the vaults of Monte Cassino Abbey (c. 1667), pen and brown ink, grey wash, on laid paper, each drawing with a seated female nude in red chalk on the reverse, and numbered 10 resp. 11 in pen and brown ink, 42,2 x 29 cm and 42,2 x 28,5 cm, browned, somewhat stained, unmounted, unframed, (2), (Sch)
The present two drawings show two scenes from the life of Saint Benedict after the ceiling frescoes by Luca Giordano in the vaults of Monte Cassino Abbey. The paintings were destroyed in World War II and are only known through photographic documentation in the Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale in Rome. A drawing after the fresco which is stilistically comparable and is attributed to Paolo de Matteis (1662-1728) was sold in the Dorotheum (lot 100) on April 4th, 2017.
