European silk embroidery,
Italy or France, c. 210 x 214 cm, end of the 17th century, extremely rare, liturgical silk embroidery with the Archangel Gabriel’s Annunciation to the Virgin Mary from the Gospel of Saint Luke, the side borders feature figural medallions, written bands, saints, putti and grotesque ornamentation, the hanging is likely to have been originally of larger size, with missing borders at the ends, some signs of wear in the pattern, entirely secured with linen fabric on the back.
