sale, Neumeister, Munich, 12 October 2016, lot 616;
where acquired by the present owner

We are grateful to Rainer Stüwe for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot. He believes that the present painting was executed in Nuremberg around 1600/1620 by an artist belonging to the circle of Jobst Harrich (circa 1580–1617).

The present painting is based on a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer (Nuremberg 1471–1528) from the series of the Life of the Virgin.

For the period from around 1600 to the first third of the seventeenth century, contemporary sources mention the workshop of Georg Gärtner the Elder and the Younger as a studio that specialised in the production of copies after works by Albrecht Dürer. The artists always employed the maximum number of collaborators permitted by the guild and sometimes even more, which suggests a brisk production. The present work seems to date from the aforementioned period.
