Friedrich Brentel is primarily known for his etchings, engravings and miniatures, media in which he was both prolific and an acknowledged master.
A popular subject, the Tower of Babel after Pieter Bruegel I is depicted in another known composition by Brentel, a watercolour (probably executed 1606–1610) in the collection of the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (see fig. 1).
The present painting depicts a group with Nimrod on the right-hand side of the picture, wearing armour in the style of antiquity and with attendants holding parasols, while much industry is minutely depicted in the fore- and mid-ground, with an expansive seascape beyond.
