Jacob Koninck was the elder brother of Philips Koninck, renowned for his panoramic landscapes. Born in Amsterdam where his particular knowledge of perspective was noted by Arnold Houbraken, he became a disciple of the landscape and animal painter Adriaen van der Velde. Active also in Dordrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam, he moved to Copenhagen where he was made court painter to King Christian V.
