An armchair, School of Adolf Loos

An armchair, School of Adolf Loos - Design

first half of the 20th century, manufactured by Friedrich Otto Schmidt (attributed), dainty construction made of solid wood, with brass sabots, the seat with polychrome striped textile covering, with artfully executed ergonomic manchettes. Height c. 74 cm, width c. 57 cm, depth c. 52 cm, height of seat c. 46 cm. (MHA)

Adolf Loos used a very similar model for Eugen Stössler’s dining room in 1899. It differs only in small details, such as the additional vertical strutting at the ends of the manchettes. The F. O. Schmidt company produced this chair as “Stössler model”, modifying it for customers. The antecedent of the chair used in Eugen Stössler’s dining room is a model produced by the British company Collison & Lock.
