A Maffersdorf carpet
North Bohemia (Czech Republic), c. 300 x 320 cm, c. 1920. Due to high demand at that time, and as an inexpensive alternative to Oriental and French rugs, carpets were also produced in a semi-mechanical process on the loom in taffeta weave with a pattern-forming pile warp. Austrian entrepreneur Wilhelm Ginzkey took over one such company active in Linz during the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy and relocated it to Maffersdorf (modern-day Vratislavice nad Nisou). The present item is in keeping with the prevailing fashion of the time, inspired by French taste, featuring roses and cornucopias around a beige central field, with cross-woven finishes hemmed on the back; overall in good condition with only minor signs of age.
