The present work can be compared to two studies by Giovanna Garzoni, which can be found in her sketch book under nos. A 68 (c. 12) and A 69 (c. 13) (see G. Casale, Giovanna Garzoni ‘Insigne miniatrice‘1600–1670, Rome 1991, p. 128, nos. A 68 and A 69).
In A 69 (c. 13) (see G. Casale, Ibid., 1991, p. 128, no. A 69) the lizard is similar to that depicted in the present sheet. The particular style of shading apparent in this work, executed with a technique of black and white pointillism, is consistent with that used by the artist in her sketchbook in the Accademia di San Luca, Rome (see op. cit. Casale, 1991, p. 121). It is possible that this work was once part of a similar sketchbook.
