Saleroom Notice:

An attribution to Alessandro Piazza (active in 1665-1727, and in Venice 1691-1700) has been confirmed on the basis of a monogram on lot 75: 1694/Ao. Pa./F.

Aristocratic collection;
where acquired by the present owner

The present painting is characterised by the dynamism of the innumerable lively figures that animate the event that is one of the most significant feast days of the Venetian calendar.

The composition is dominated by the imposing presence of the Bucintoro, the vessel having left the Bacino di San Marco is shown advancing toward the Lido on the day of the Sensa – the Ascension. This annual event was held to commemorate the naval victory of Doge Pietro Orsoleo over Dalmatian pirates, which according to tradition, occurred on the day of the Ascension in 998.

Other versions of this painting are known, among which the most significant is that in the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts, dated 1700 and published by Dario Succi (see D. Succi, Luca Carlevarijs, Gorizia 2015, pp. 45-47, fig. 36).
