Il Falsario di Guercino
(active mid-18th century)
A man in a plumed hat and with playing cards, seated in a landscape under a tree, pen and brown ink, over traces of red chalk, on laid paper, with an indistinct watermark, 25 x 32 cm, laid down on later laid paper, browned, somewhat stained, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Anonymous collector’s mark monogram M (not with Lugt).
The present sheet goes back to a composition by Guercino representing three soldiers playing cards in the Palazzo Rosso in Genova and which may have served the artist as a model. See: Piero Boccardo, Exh. Cat. Genua, “Genoa e Guercino. Dipinti e Disegni delle Civiche Collezioni”, Genova 1992, pp. 42–4, No 7. The exhibition catalogue mentions other two drawings by the same hand after the composition by Guercino which are preserved in the Albertina, Vienna and in the Brera in Milan.
