Saint Paul,

The present picture depicts Saint Paul in the manner of an ancient philosopher. Nearly all artistic renderings of the Apostle follow, more or less strictly, the conventions of the Paulus imagery that has been developed since the early days of the Christian faith. However, these usually do not at all endeavour to portray any realistic details of the Apostle’s physiognomy - a factor that does set our painting apart. Brandl seems to have individualised the Saint’s facial characteristics and portrayed a man gazing at us, transmitting the sensuality of baroque painting in a direct and almost unsaintly manner.
The cataloguing has been changed to German School, 18th Century as Andrea Steckerová has not accepted the attribution to Peter Johannes Brandl.
