Commemorating the 20 millionth Beetle, VW released its first special model onto the market, the Beetle Jubilee, back in 1972. Numerous special models followed. The “Aubergine Beetle” was then released in 1983 in the autumn of the model’s life. It was produced with identical features precisely 3,300 times. And Volkswagen was especially generous here. Particularly classy flourishes are already visible from the outside thanks to the upmarket metallic paint, emphasised by decorative strips and rim ornaments. This chic style continues on the inside with colour-coded fabrics and panelling, a four-spoke steering wheel and the “Braunschweig II” radio.

Keen to ensure the car preserved its beauty, the first owner of this Aubergine Beetle fitted seat covers when registering the vehicle in May 1983. The VW was always kept in the garage until it’s deregistration in May 2008, also to protect its pristine condition. She used it for occasional excursions and to go shopping. The vehicle was serviced regularly, so there are complete records confirming its milage. Later on, the owner left the VW to her grandson, also a Beetle enthusiast, who brought the extraordinarily well-preserved Sleeping Beauty back from its deep slumber, using the VW presentation at Beetle meetings during a short phase of registration, before placing it safely back in the garage. He removed the seat covers, conducted a service inspection and ordered a certificate of authenticity in Wolfsburg. In view of the vehicle’s minimal milage, this model is a genuine original – probably parked more than it was driven – in an extraordinarily good condition.
