We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Pieter van de Venne.
A very similar painting was with Johnny van Haeften, London, in 1994. Another comparable work, dated 1656, is in the Detroit Art Institute (see G. Keyes, S. Donahue Kuretsky, A. Rüger and A. K. Wheelock Jr., Masters of Dutch Painting, Detroit-London 2004, no. 99).
