Lotto No. 241

Pieter Hofmans, called il Giannizzero

Pieter Hofmans, called il Giannizzero - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp circa 1642–1692 Rome)
Two battle scenes of the Siege of Vienna,
oil on canvas, each 96 x 190 cm, framed, a pair (2)

We are grateful to Giancarlo Sestieri for suggesting the attribution and his help in cataloguing the present paintings (written communication).

Sestieri has suggest that these two battle scenes represent the Siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683, and the ensuing war, only concluded in 1699. In both paintings the city appears to have been painted most probably on the basis of engravings.

In the painting in which Vienna appears in the centre-middle ground, on top of a hill, there is a commander on a white horse near the edge on the right who wears armour and a feathered hat, while he holds a sword in his extended right hand who may be identifiable as Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Reference to this important historical event was popular with battle painters of the period and in the present compositions Hofmans succeeds in interpreting the scene with imaginative originality. The Flemish painter was probably a pupil of Jacques Courtois and in 1660 he moved to Italy following a journey to Turkey, from which his moniker probably derived.
