On Michael Kienzer’s series of works using assemblages of boards and panels:
“Once Michael Kienzer has approached a material, he inflects it in numerous variants. For example, the series using glass panels was followed by works in which he combined glass with other industrial semi-finished products. The artist called one of these sculptures, whose titles resemble instructions for scientific experiments or geographic coordinates, ‘21 x 94°’. For this work, he arranged 21 different panel elements vertically and diagonally in such a way that they always form angles of 94 degrees. Panels of transparent temperate glass nestle up against aluminium and hardboard or coloured fibreboard and acrylic glass. These works seem to combine all of the materials Michael Kienzer has ever employed within a single object, rearranging them according to ever new painterly and compositional criteria.”
(Manisha Jothady)
“Michael Kienzer’s work as a whole betrays a basic constant. The artist fathoms the potentials of aesthetic transformation and shifts in meaning inherent to all things. Confronting his art with complex spatial and social reference systems, he undermines the representative qualities and innermost structures of the materials and spaces he encounters in order to subtly and subversively reposition them for his own purposes. This results in unsettling interventions, as they upset conditioned and ever-identical chains permanently signalising and suggesting the proper use of things and the standardisation of values.”
