In 1904, “(...) Ferdinand Schmutzer completed one of his most remarkable graphic works, the ‘Joachim Quartet’. At the time of its creation this etching (...) was regarded as one of the largest prints in the world. Not only its unusual format, but also the composition of the four musicians caused a stir and made Ferdinand Schmutzer immediately famous” (Bärbel Holaus/Matthias Peschke eds., Ferdinand Schmutzer 1870-1928, Die Musikerporträts, Vienna 2001, p. 19)
