We are grateful to Mauro Lucco for suggesting the attribution to Calisto Piazza (Lodi 1500-1561) for the present painting on the basis of a photograph.
In the present composition, a lady is depicted, half-length, against a green background, seated with a lap dog. The sitter is wearing a black dress, with sleeves set low on the shoulder, over a shift with an embroidered border. On her head she wears a balzo, a type of headdress fashionable in Italy during the 1520s and 1530s.
Standing behind the sitter is another woman with her hand resting on the figure´s shoulder. It has been suggested that she may represent a fortune teller and that this figure may have been added a later date.
