Jan Brueghel II

Jan Brueghel II - Dipinti antichi

(Antwerp 1601–1678) and
Pieter van Avont
(Mechelen 1600–1652 Antwerp)
The Rest on the Flight into Egypt,
oil on canvas, 89 x 71.7 cm, framed

Klaus Ertz confirmed the present painting as an authentic work by Jan Brueghel II (landscape, fruit, flowers) and Pieter van Avont (figures). A written certificate (July 2020) is available.

Ertz dates the painting to the late 1630s. He writes: ‘What speaks in favour of this date of execution are the extremely painterly landscape, with its conspicuously contorted trees, and the flowers in the lower right corner, which, similar to the fruit, have been defined with a few brushstrokes. In this landscape, the son, Jan Brueghel the Younger, has considerably detached himself from his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and the latter’s obsession with detail, in order to pursue his own painterly approach.’
