David Vinckboons

David Vinckboons - Dipinti antichi

(Mechelen 1576 – before 1633 Amsterdam)
An Allegory of Spring,
oil on panel, 34 x 54 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Aachen, Germany

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting to David Vinckboons. A written certificate (May 2020) is available.

Ertz writes: ‘The townscape by the river, with boats loaded with shrubs and two figures seated in the right foreground, contains typical hints of an allegorical representation of spring […]. Allegorical themes were important in Flemish painting in general from the very outset and saw their absolute heyday during the first half of the seventeenth century in the tradition of the Brueghels. The boats on the river, decorated with flowers and shrubs, the figures dressed in merry colours and conversing on the riverbank, and the musician playing the lute to the right of the roots of a tree clearly indicate the season of spring. Vinckboons is a master when it comes to depicting “elegant parties” such as the one introduced in the foreground of the present picture.’ Ertz dates the painting to the 1620s.
