(Brussels 1625–1678)
An archery competition outside the walls of a town,
oil on canvas, 95.5 x 59.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
with Galleria Caretto, Turin;
where acquired by the present owner;
Private European collection
The present painting, depicting a tournament of archers, appears to be one of the most ambitious compositions by Gillis van Tilborgh. He specialised in pastoral or bucolic subjects which sometimes show the influence of Joos van Craesbeeck or David Teniers II, who might have been his teacher. In his tavern scenes Tilborgh shows himself to be a close follower of Adriaen Brouwer, just as Joos van Craesbeeck and David Ryckaert III were. His village scenes, such as the present work, follow the style of David Teniers’s II mature period. During this period Teniers had moved away from the traditional depiction of peasants as uncultured boors towards a more idealised and elevated perception of country folk and village life.
