We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Adriaen van Stalbemt. A written certificate (May 2020) is available.
Ertz writes: ‘The beginning of his [Stalbemt’s] interest in ancient mythology can only be observed for the time after 1620. From then on, however, the painter intensively dealt with this thematic group until around 1640. Unlike his great model, Jan Brueghel the Elder, he painted the mythological, allegorical, or Christian protagonists mostly populating his landscapes clustered with densely foliated trees himself. Van Stalbemt collaborated with painters’ colleagues only very scarcely.’ Ertz dates the painting into the years around 1630.
