signed and dated lower left (on the rock): C Heck fecit. 1627,
oil on canvas, 77 x 104 cm, framed
An alternative attribution has been suggested to Claes Jacobsz. van der Heck (Alkmaar 1575 -1652) whose identity has been historically confused with Claes Dircksz. van der Heck. Claes Dircksz. was the cousin of Claes Jacobsz. and acted as his assistant before becoming an independent master in 1635.
